A few days went by before Eve’s mother reached out to her asking if she could come by her apartment to talk. Eve rescheduled the few meetings she had for the day and tried to prepare herself for the worst. Her mother sounded so distant on the phone, however, the fact that she wanted to talk in person was a good sign.

“You painted since the last time I was here,” Eve’s mother said when she arrived.

“Do you like it?”

“It’s very nice, brightens up the room.”

“Would you like something to drink?”

“No, I’m fine.”

They sat on the sofa with Eve’s mother fidgeting with the placement of the back cushions.

Eve placed her hand over her mother’s. “Mommy, please just talk to me.”

Her mother nodded with a tired sigh. “I knew when you came by the day after your date that you were trying to find the nerve to tell me something. When you didn’t say anything, I figured it couldn’t have been important or you would’ve talked to me. The worst thing I could think of was that you were dating someone of another race. I could’ve never imagined that it was a woman.”

Her mother looked so sad that Eve was almost tempted to stop her from continuing, but she knew they needed to have this conversation in order to move on.

“You know, it’s funny, I always considered myself a very liberal woman until the moment you made your announcement. Suddenly, decades of strict Catholic upbringing took over and I could no longer see you as this strong, independent woman, but as my little girl who I’d somehow failed. Why else would she be willing to live such a life? At first, I wondered what I did wrong. Was there something I could’ve seen while you were growing up?” Her mother’s voice caught, then she seemed to take a moment to pull herself together.

“Then I thought of my sister Cecelia. When Julian first told her he was gay, she called me hysterical. She wondered why God was punishing her with first taking her husband then making her only son gay. Was not having a father in his life the reason for it or was there something she did as his mother that made him that way? I told her that Julian being gay had nothing to do with any of that. It was just the way he was. It didn’t make him any less her son. She wouldn’t hear any of it. Told me that I’d spent too much time in America to know how wrong it was. Even when he decided to have the sex change, and I saw how hurt he was by his mother’s reaction, I still believed that there was nothing wrong with his decision. It had been obvious to everyone but Cecelia that Julian wasn’t going to be the son she expected him to be.”

Eve’s mother had been avoiding her gaze while she spoke, but she looked up now. “Then you made your announcement and I suddenly found myself looking through my sister’s eyes.
